I am available as a writing teacher,
speaker and personal coach:
Writing Your Life: The Art of the Personal Essay
I believe that everyone can write. The problem is that somewhere
along the way, someone made you feel self-conscious or frozen.
A teacher, a parent, your own internal critic. In my course,
I create a nonjudgmental, safe place where you can take a
risk, explore your life through writing narrative nonfiction.
Whether you want to write a personal memoir, learn how to
get an essay published, or simply learn more about yourself
through writing, you will find a place to explore and challenge
yourself here.
Come prepared to write and read in a supportive atmosphere!

Lecture: Freeing Ourselves from the
Tyranny of the Scale
(Or, Why Laughter Is Good for at Least 2000 Calories)
Do you take off your earrings before weighing yourself? Do you subtract three pounds from your weight if you have long hair? Women everywhere find their moods, their lives, their self-image ruled by that tiny little scale needle. Let's throw off the shackles and celebrate our bodies in all our various shapes and sizes. We are women and we are incredible
“Beth Levine managed to get a 240-member
audience to celebrate their behinds, whether big or small,
during her keynote presentation at the Women & Family
Life Center’s 3rd Annual Women’s Health Conference.
Her humorous take on our obsession with body image was uplifting,
and appropriately timed to happen during lunch as we stuffed
our faces with the high fat / calorie / sugar / salt all-you-can-eat
buffet. Beth provided a welcome dose of humor on the tyranny
of the scale during our day of health for the mind, body and
spirit.”
--Liza Petra, director, Women & Family Life Center,
Guilford, Conn.
Personal Coaching
I can offer one-on-one coaching via e-mail and phone on personal
essays and query letters. Rates to be negotiated.
But don’t take just my word for it:
TESTIMONIALS
“For the past dozen years or so I have considered
Beth Levine my writing mentor. She has provided insightful
feedback that has helped me lift the level of my work so that
it was publishable. She has been a sensitive guide, well aware
of the fragile ego a writer wears on his sleeve. But she is
also honest and sincere in her critiques of my work. Without
Beth's support and guidance I would not be the writer I am
today.”
--Marty Kaminsky, author of Uncommon Champions
“I wanted more! Beth provided a great balance of
lecture, sharing good examples of essays, writing exercises
and anecdotes. I came away jazzed and ready to write.
Great stuff. She was terrific!”
--Kathy Sena, journalist
“Beth Levine was wonderful to work with and her
reputation as a top teacher of essay writing drew a wide audience
of both beginning and well-published writers. Her three-hour
workshop won high praise from participants. I'd be delighted
to work with her again, or to recommend her as a writing teacher
in any venue.”
--Minda Zetlin, Workshop Coordinator, American Society
of Journalists and Authors Convention
“Not only does Beth have years of experience writing
essays that sell, but she has the gift of knowing how to relay
that information in a straight-forward manner. Her sense of
humor and enthusiasm make her a joy to work with as a coach."
--Jen Haupt, journalist
“Beth Levine's writing workshop inspired me to take
my essay writing to the next level. Her insightful comments,
always encouraging but also thought provoking, encouraged
me to crank out a new essay on an old idea. She used starter
topics and time limits to get the group started and I have
several working pieces from those exercises.”
--Carolyn Magner Mason, journalist
